David Hookes had a promising start to his career when as a 21 year old
playing for South Australia, he created news by scoring five centuries
from six innings in 1977. Such an impressive performance earned him a
berth in the test side against England in the same year. David Hookes
confirmed his talent with 56 runs in the second innings that included
five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig.
David Hookes was a part of the World Series Cricket in the 1970s. Playing in one of these matches, he got his jaw broken by a rising delivery from Andy Roberts. The injury marked the decline of his career in test cricket.
David Hookes’ highest score in test cricket came against Sri Lanka, when he raced to 143 runs in 152 balls. Inspite of a disappointing test career, David Hookes remained a prolific scorer at the domestic level. His 306 not out against Tasmania is remembered for the brashness and the audacity of the array of shots.
